It is not only our job to take great photos, but to make sure you look great in your engagement photos as well. One of the biggest things we do to help keep us on top is education. Each year we attend a week long photography school to make sure we are on top of our game, and the best Phoenix Wedding Photographers.
If you are looking for some tips for your engagement session you are in the right place. We hope these tips help you for your engagement session!
We 100% think every couple should book an engagement session that is long enough, say 1 hour, for at least 1 outfit change. Here is why! Some couples pick outfits that they think they are going to love, but once they see the outfit they "loved" they might just hate it in photos. Yes, this has happened before. By having at least 2 outfit changes the odds of you hating both outfits are a lot less.
Keep in mind your locations. If you are heading to the mountains, think about your shoes, make sure footwear match the location or look you are going for. We tell our couples to make sure they dress as "them". A style that fits who you are! We also tell them to try and wear jeans for one of their outfits. This allows couples to sit on the ground, logs, desert dirt, or anything without getting a pretty dress dirty, or stabbed in the leg by something. Last thing a lady wants is a bug up her dress...lol!
When it comes to the "vibe" of your engagement photos, think about who you are as a couple. What are things you like to do together? What do you do in your free time? What are some of your favorite locations? How did you meet? And so on. Things like this will make your engagement session your own. Do you play games? Ride bikes? Like to cook at your home? All these make for great locations or add fun to your session.

We know that being in front of the camera can be stressful, especially for couples who are not used to taking photos. Do not worry, you are not the first couple, or person, to feel this way. There are a few things you can do to help ease that stress.
One thing we tell our couples is to have a drink, if you are a drinker and drinks help you relax. Keep it fun! Adding things like riding a bike, playing a sport, or adding your furbaby to your engagement session can help as well.
Junebug Wedding says, "When in doubt, kiss it out"! This is great advice. Closes your eyes and go in for a kiss. That your love for one another shines and you will not be looking at the camera. It will help you feel more connected to our partner.
We LOVE furbabies! Yes, adding your dog/s to your engagement session is a blast. We do let our couples know things may not go as they think it will. Most dogs are not highly trained, so getting them to sit when there are new people, lighting, and cameras around can be hard, or even stress a dog out.
Walking and holding hands tend to end up in the best photos. This is more natural for your furbaby and allows them to do their thing and allows your engagement photographer to capture more natural moments.
I mean, those are really the only two I can think of!! And not too many people are all about the traditional anymore. They are making their own rules and living their own lives, and we are all for it!
Lighting for sure is one of the biggest factors when thinking about doing a first look or not! If you are getting married in Oct or Nov in Arizona, your sunset will be close to 5:30ish give or take. If you did the first look beforehand you have to fit in your wedding party photos, family photos, marriage license, and your couple photo… PLUS get ready for Grand Entrance in 1 hour, unless you extend your cocktail hour by 30 minutes. We recommend that extension for all our couples not doing a first look. What might happen if you don’t is that you may only have 10 minutes with your wedding photographer for your couple photos… NO!! We want more like 25 to 30 minutes to get our creative juices going and be able to explore that Phoenix wedding venue you paid for!
Another big factor that people love is that a first look can be a private moment between the couple with no one looking on. It really gives you a moment to take it all in and embrace the love and just how stunning your human looks on the day you both say I Do. Those seconds and moments in time you will never get back. There will be no cell phones in the photos, no one jumping in front of our cameras, no stress from people watching, and those moments where you can really stop and take a breath to just look into each others’ eyes without an “officiant” talking and having you move past that moment in time too fast. It is honestly one of the most beautiful moments in couples lives… Yep… A first look!
No matter what you decide for your wedding day we always tell our couple to pick what you heart tell you to go with. If that is walking down the aisle to see each other for the first time, we are all about that love!
These are just options of your favorite Phoenix Wedding Photographer, DePoy Studios!
